Spokane Trip

November 15, 2010

The Omicron Psi chapter took our annual Spokane trip on November 13th. The day was packed with professional tours, networking, reunions with alumni, and even a social event thanks to the excellent planning of our Vice President of Professional Activities, Preston Nolan. The chapter toured a couple of local businesses including Northern Quest Resort and Casino, Spokane Arena, Barili Cellars Winery and Indaba Coffee. Indaba Coffee is a small business started up by DSP alumni Bobby Enslow. After graduating from Washington State University as a part of the Omicron Psi chapter, Brother Enslow started a café in downtown Spokane. The café focuses on good food, local artistry and giving back to the community. After a full day of professional activities brothers took a break to relax and socialize at a Spokane Chiefs game. We thank all of the professionals who took time out of their busy days to give us tours and everyone else that helped make this trip a success.

Merry Cellars Winery Tour

October 10, 2010

Touring Merry Cellars on October 6th was our first large professional event as a group. Patrick Merry, owner of Merry Cellars Winery, gave us a tour of his family owned winery.

Mr. Merry talked to us about the process it takes to let wine age and ferment to get the proper flavor and color. He stated that each barrel is coated with a special type of flavoring layer that is absorbed by the wine as it ferments in the barrel for 18 months. It is a very delicate formula and to contrive the right flavor. With the name Merry Cellars in at least 7 different states he still cannot produce enough cases to supply his consumers. Mr. Merry stated that the wine business is in high demand and will always be. A smart producer “just needs to figure out how to put his bottle at the front of the wine shelf and in front of the rest”.

Final Spring Update: Seattle Trip

May 16, 2010

Hey guys and gals, it’s your friendly neighborhood Vice President of Alumni Relations, Jordan Comar, here for one last update before sir Alex Fischer steps in and takes the reins!

On the weekend of April 16th-18th, our chapter took a trip over to the Settle area. The trip was organized and executed by our VP of Alumni Relations (ME!). On Friday, we took a tour of Boeing’s Renton 737 Production Factory. It was an amazing experience seeing the production line up close in addition to understanding what it takes to assemble an aircraft in the short amount of time that Boeing does. After the Boeing tour, we went to a Seattle Mariners baseball game where we met up with a few alumni from our own chapter (Anne Zaremba, Ben Landry, and Rich Olson); afterwards we went to Dicks  Burgers for dinner. The next day we toured Pan Pacific Hotel which was hosted by Joe Speer (also an alumni of the chapter). Joe did a great job answering all of our questions and showing us around the hotel and its neighboring facilities! Later that night we went attended a Networking Dinner located at BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery at the South Center Mall in Tukwila. We were able to network with many alumni of the chapter as well as the fraternity in addition to Ashley Comar (a marketer for the city of Tukwila & surrounding cities), Joe and Lori Riordan (Joe is an entrepreneur who started his own seafood distribution company and Lori is the city attorney for Bellevue) and the accountant, Samantha Simons. Thank you all very much for joining us at dinner! Overall, the trip was an absolute blast and we hope to make it an annual event so that the alumni in the Seattle area can easily interact with the chapter every year!

Well kids, as I said earlier, this is my last update before Alex Fischer takes over as the new VP of Alumni Relations. It was an incredible ride, thank you for all the memories and experiences! Jordan Comar, OUT!

Spring Updates: Spokane Business Trip!

April 14, 2010

The chapter took a trip over to Spokane, Washington for the last weekend in January. We took and fun and informative tour of Dryfly Distillery and Northern Lights Brewery. We learned about the purification, aging, and other process involved in making their whiskey, vodka, and gin. Additionally, our own Vice President of Professional Activities, Shannon Aree, set up a lovely networking dinner at Uno Tapas Lounge where we were joined by a few alumni and business professionals. Lastly, we went up to Schweitzer Mountain Resort where we talked to the marketing director, Dave Kulis, to learn about some of the challenges and strategies involved with marketing for a large mountain resort (in addition to hitting a few runs of skiing and snowboarding)! Ultimately, the trip was substantially interesting, fun, and a great overall bonding experience. We would like to thank the alumni who joined us at the networking dinner: Brian Gillespie, Jeff Brown, and Cody Lee.

Recruitment Underway

September 20, 2007

Daily GrindRecruitment is well underway and included several activities this year. On September 3rd the brothers met with potential new members (PNMs) at the infamous Zeppoz bowling social. The following day included an event at the new Cafe Moro coffee house expansion in Adam’s Mall, which included a brief presentation from owner Keith Bloom about his hopes and plans for the new shop. The new location boasts a full kitchen and has already been supplying the downtown location with fresh baked goods. Bloom also explained how he hopes to launch a successful catering service and serve breakfast until 7 p.m.

DSP MTCRecruitment activities continued the following week with a visit with the owner of The Daily Grind in downtown Pullman. The next day a meet the chapter event followed the Carson Center Student Welcome. The meet the chapter event included a brief presentation about who/what Delta Sigma Pi is as well as time to just meet chapter members and ask questions, if they couldn’t make it to other events to do so. Our organized recruitment events concluded with three days of interviews. Over 25 PNMs were interviewed and bids are to be given out personally or mailed during the week of September 24th.
